Well, our final full day at Plas Gwynant and boy, was it an eventful one! The children have now finished their disco - unfortunately for them Mr Kettle was on the decks - and had chance to overload on sugar, throw some shapes and discuss some of the memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.
To finish our Plas Gwynant updates, here are some more extracts from some of our fantastic children's diaries. Enjoy...
Liberty: Today was amazing; we went canoeing and abseiling (AWESOME!). When canoeing some of us were offered to go for a swim but it was rather cold! Then we finished the day with a Christmas diner (with crackers) and a disco. Five stars!
Lincoln: Today was phenomenal! We went to the beach and played in the deep sand! We also travelled through rockpools and discovered amazing creatures like: small crabs, muscles, sea-snails and clams! We then climbed some waterfalls (called gorge walking) - it was very hard and only a few could do it.
Shannon: Today I went abseiling and canoeing and all was great except for when I was freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzing cold! However, while we were abseiling we were attached to a rope and if we fell another person from our tam would be at the bottom to the rope ready to pull if we fell. Tonight, we are all getting ready for the disco and I hope we will all have a great time!
On a personal note, all Oakham staff have been extremely proud of how the boys and girls have adapted to the conditions, demonstrated fantastic teamwork skills and threw themselves into every challenge - it has been a fantastic week.
Today has been absolutely fantastic, not only for the children, but for the staff too. Throughout the day and during various activities, each and every group has seen children - some which have taken us by surprise - step up and face every challenge head on. So, instead of writing a paragraph about what they did and how they did it, we thought that the day would be best told through their own words...
Ebony: This morning we had breakfast and we went out into our mini van to explore a mountain. We then walked through the steepest of mountains to get to an old mine; through the mine I got really upset because I was scared, but I made it through and was proud of myself!
Andy: We went abseiling - it was really fun! The best part was when we did an upside down star. When we did canoeing though, I made Mr Barnett's life harder (yay!).
Cayden: Today was easily the best of all; we went to the mines and had so much fun (and maybe a little bit more hot chocolate than we should have...). Free time was great too as I was playing ping pong with Lincoln.
Grace: Today was an amazing experience because in the morning we went abseiling - it was sooo scary at first, but I gave it a go. We had to hang upside down with our friends holding the rope at the bottom and it was all about trusting one and other. Also, at the end of canoeing, I jumped in the lake - it was epic!
More of the same tomorrow, eh guys?
They say no day at Plas Gwyant is the same and today has certainly proved that! In order to prepare us for the big day ahead, our first breakfast involved filling our faces on carbohydrates: cereal, toast and beans sorting everyone out. We then had our very own weatherman, Callum, to announce the day of weather we had in store... and in true Plas style, wet and windy was the theme for the day.
No matter - the children got suited and booted in their thermals and waterproofs and launched themselves into the day's activities. Mr Kettle's group felt like they were extras from a Hobbit movie and took the short trip over to the Wrysgan mines to explore and learn about a landscape of curiosity, history, but also beauty. Miss Abraham's group, full of optimism, delved into the local beach with the others using their first full day to learn all about the legend of Gelert's grave (no spoilers here at Plas - we'll let the kids tell you about that when they're home!)
Drenched yet still upbeat, the groups returned back to base to be greeted with hot showers and warm cookies. Refreshed and full of conversation about the day's activities and challenges, they then settled down to a British classic - sausage and mash, followed by warm sponge and custard.
To finish the night, the children have unleashed their competitive edge by teaming up into small groups and competing in an indoor orienteering competition. We're still awaiting the winner as we await our diaries and hot chocolate to wind down the final moments of Day 2.
Wow - what a whirlwind of a start to life at Plas Gywnant! After the long journey - with some simply stunning sights and landscapes along the way - the children were extremely eager to get off the coach and get stuck into their lunches (as expected). We were then introduced to our instructors for the week who took us on a tour of the grounds and then finally allowed the children time to become acquainted with what is in their suitcases and pack it away - hopefully neatly!
With no time to waste, we charged outside into the grounds and did a few rolls down some Welsh mounds, just to test out if those famous red Plas Gwynant waterproofs were working! We can all be thankful they were. If that wasn't enough, the menu for tea time was revealed to be a choice between fish fingers or pizza with chips - a real toughie.
However, the 'star' event - literally - was saved for the end of the night, where we were all taken out to experience the silence of a night walk and to gaze at the clear, night sky, featuring an almost full moon. They were that quiet we could have left a few of them there all night, but we thought it was best not to...
Hot chocolate, bourbons and a decent night's kip is, now, very much needed (and that's just Miss Abraham).
